Radiant Ether
Artist Statement:
"Watch out!" "Aim higher!" "Woo-hoo!" "Not so close!" "What the hell?"
We live in a world filled with constant explosions of strong opinions, biases, fears, and energy. In this chaos, nothing feels entirely safe. We are tightly packed, surrounded by unpredictable explosions erupting in every direction.
The image colors are intentionally inverted, like a film camera’s color negatives. Vibrant hues transform into soft pastels, and once-familiar shapes become something else. The images have the essence of Rorschach tests, which were designed to reveal subconscious thoughts and emotions through the interpretation of ambiguous images.
By using color negatives, I also play on the very idea of “negative.” Negatives can shift perception and turn positives into negatives or vice versa. This color inversion also forces one to pause, reconsider, and question what we see. As we look deeper, we may find that our thoughts evolve. It also invites us to have conversations with others about their perceptions. In doing so, it creates an opportunity for dialogue with others.
In this series, I capture shifting bursts of color, light, and energy. All of these images are shot handheld, dancing in rhythm with the evolution of subject. The bursts last mere seconds and then disappear into memory. Each image captures circumstances that can never return and they show that beauty and belief are fragile.
Do these color-negative images of explosions serve as a Rorschach test for our times?
What do they reveal about the human impulse to find meaning in the ephemeral?
In these divisive times, what do these images reveal about your perceptions, fears, and hopes?
Below are the images in Set 2, which are the more literal images in Radiant Ether.
