an affair with an affair

Affair at the Jupiter, it keeps building. It felt good, it felt creative.
I showed up at 5 minutes before the official end of the opening party to get a quick preview. Jahn, PORT, mentioned it was a nice sedate opening, with more serious collectors than partiers. While serious is good, a nice transition to something that serves to tie between Portland’s vibrant art scene and vibrant music scene would have been nice. I thought that Malkmus & the Jicks was a fitting touch last year.
Maybe it was when I was there but it seemed to me like the crowds was a big thinner on Saturday when I was there or Sunday when I drove by. Again it is a balance nice to actually see the art instead of nudging around for each view. Of course that does give a “community feel” 🙂
Don’t really take any of that as criticism, all told it was an affair well balanced in many dimensions. Seeing the all of the work was really great. I love how good work inspires me to do completely different work that I see.
It was great to see the variety of out-of-town galleries such as James Harris(Seattle), Allston Skirt(Boston), Richard Levy (New Mexico), Greg Kucera(Seattle), Solomon Projects(Atlanta), Electric Works(San Francisco), Gallery 415 (San Francisco), Pertimenti (Philadephia), and others… I also enjoyed the various Portland offerings at Tilt (Portland), Elizabeth Leach (Portland), Mark Woolley (Portland), Quality Pictures(Portland), Laura Russo(Portland), …
I hope it was profitable for the galleries so that the affair will continue on this arc. …or maybe Portland is cool enough that they’ll just keep coming back, OK.. let’s face it, I hope it was economically worth it. There was some work I would have bought if I would have had the bucks. I hope others could do some “heavy lifting.”
I was going to head back on Sunday for another round, but life got busy and Sunday I headed to see the Ursula von Rydingsvard lecture at PAM. I’ve always enjoyed her large organic formed wooden sculptures. Twas a good lecture and very worthwhile. She started off talking about how different it was to land at PDX and wait for her luggage. She noted a different feeling looking around at the people… she said “it felt akin to something like being happy.”
