I have Battles new CD “Mirrored” on heavy rotation, they are doing some interesting things. I’m finding a lot of people around here aren’t familiar with this New York band, but get ready Portland… 2-Nov at Hawthorne Theater (1507 SE 39th, ticketswest)

lots of interesting repeating musical images. They’ve found a great sound constructed and deconstructed to take things to a higher level with a good bit of flowing mystery. I’m simultaneously dragged around and nuanced.
Battles is composed of well-experienced musicians, John Stanier (ex-Helmet drummer), Ty Braxton (vocals, guitarist, keyboard, also son of avant-garde jazz musician Anthony Braxton), Ian Williams (ex-Don Caballero guitarist), and Dave Konopka (ex-Lynx guitarist).

One of their earliler songs is called “Burkina Faso”, which provides me one more opportunity to say “Ouagadougou”. I traveled to Ouagadougou several years ago while I was in west Africa. I have some great stories from that trip. I just love saying “Ouagadougou”, which is the capital city of Burkina Faso. Or you can simply say Ouaga (wah-ga). Ouagadougou is prounounced wah-ga-do-gooo, but I digress…. 🙂
