Modernist art in camouflage
Nov 13th, 2007 by Brad
Last month I went to visit the Portland Art Museum’s Camouflage show (review at PORT). It reminded me about Dazzle painting. Dazzle was a interesting little bit of Navy history. My Dad was a Navy man and the aircraft carrier he served, the USS Hancock, was even commissioned in Dazzle paint. I grew up seeing the Hancock in Dazzle paint due to the photograph of the ship in my parent’s room.
A really nice blog on Dazzle painting with lots of images can be found at: “Modernist art in camouflage”
My Dad never told us his war stories. Men of his generation who saw action never talked about it much. Finally he has agreed to start tell my Mom some of his stories. This was published in a newspaper article in the Freeport Journal Standard last weekend “Memories of America at War”. Wikipedia entry on USS Hancock.
The image at the beginning of this blog of the HMS Argus is a work of a sailor or employee of the U.S. Navy, taken or made during the course of the person’s official duties. As a work of the U.S. federal government, the image is in the public domain.
