Preview of Portland’s First Thursday Gallery Openings
Apr 2nd, 2008 by Brad
Lucinda Parker great new show “Not An Exit, New Paintings” is at Laura Russo Gallery (805 NW 21st, Portland, OR).
I was very inspired by the strong images and bold interplay of the colors. The strong elements are balanced by interesting details. An artist talk with Lucinda Parker will be held at the gallery on Saturday, April 19 at 11am. Eva Lake posted an YouTube video interview with Lucinda.
Next I went to the Mark Woolley Gallery (817 SW 2nd, Portland OR), where there is a show calle “Choice Cuts: works from private collections”. It has work from Rick Bartow, Tom Cramer, David French, Anne Grgich, M. K. Guth, Robert Rauschenberg, Milton Wilson and many others.
I finished up this preview night at Elizabeth Leach Gallery. At Elizabeth Leach Gallery (17 NW 9th, Portland OR) was Al Souza’s Recent Work.
At I liked Al Souza’s paper works better than the jigsaw puzzle works. In the paper works the layers of cut posters, prints and Braille paper stuck into a new kinds of abstraction. In the work “Jimi, James, and Bob”, the oval cutouts end up abstracting the three musicians into a lyrical cellular lace.
To me the jigsaw puzzle work was less interesting. the layers of puzzle fragments were colorful but for me they lacked a special novel dimension.
Also at Elizabeth Leach Gallery is Fernanda D’Agostino’s installation “Motion Studies”. You may have seen Fernada’s photographic work in the gallery in December. This month’s installation takes some of those ideas much further. I liked the installation quite a bit. It has an intriguing dance of video, mobile, lights, and shadows.
This and the previous work is created in collaboration with biomechanist Dr. Bret Tobalske and cinematographer Harry Dawson, D’Agostino’s interactive video installation captures flight motion and abstraction of flight in a very fun way.
