Printmaker Technical Information

Laser Light Photographic & Printmaking, Inc.

Prints: All photographs are created in a strictly optical photographic manner. No digital manipulations are used in creating the image. However, the technological advances in digital printing of film-based photos now exceeds the quality, resolution, and consistency of optical based printing, making it the best choice for the final prints.

The combination of good communication with the photographer and the personal touch of the master digital printer is required for the right look for a custom fine art photograph. I have chosen Laser Light Photographics of Aptos California. It is a small print making lab, producing only the highest quality work. Laser Light Photographics and Printmaking was established by master digital printer Bill Nordstrom to make the best possible color photographic prints using state-of-the-art digital methods.

The Scan: The experience and the understanding of the color separation process allows Laser Light use their scanner to its full potential. The photographer's original transparency is scanned into the digital world by using the very best high end scanner, an Heidelberg Tango (PrimeScan) Scanner. It can capture up to 11,000 pixels per inch from the original 2 1/4" slide. The ICC scanner profile is added to the images as they are scanned, and printed to match material used in the final print.

The Printer: Laser Light uses the U.S.-made Chromira photographic printer to get better control over the fine art photographic prints. They are able to balance both the printer and its processor so that they have the total control necessary to maintain consistent color. The Chromira prints at 300 pixels per inch (using 425 optic fibers to expose the photographic paper). The quality of the print is equal to or better than LightJet prints.

The Experience: Bill Nordstrom has over 50 years of experience making color separations and fine color photographic prints, including Tri-Color Carbro, dye transfer, Cibachrome, Type "C" and Type "R" printing. He also developed well-known pigment transfer process and dye print processes. All digital imaging was performed by Master Digital Printers Bill Nordstrom and Erik Peterson. Erik has worked in the fields of color printing and digital imaging for 14 years, including three years making custom Cibachrome prints. He is a skilled technician in both traditional photographic labs and the world of computers and digital printers.
