Two Pulitzer prizes and lives derailed

The impact of Pulitzer prizes in recent times has gone well beyond just making people stop for a moment and really looking at an image. It reminds everyone that often these work can also have huge impact on the people involved.
The LA times just had this article on what became known as the Marlboro man image by Times photographer Luis Sinco. You should read it.
I was reminded of Kevin Carter’s 1994 Pulitzer image and a work of art based on his story. In 2006 when I was in Houston, I saw Alfredo Jaar’s installation “The Sound of Silence” at Houston’s FotoFest in March 2006. It is a powerful work of art. See it if you ever have an opportunity (Alfredo Jaar’s website). There is also an NPR story about Kevin Carter.
