What is it exactly, well… you’re inside of a wordless show filled with the dance sounds of a club, performances and visual feats happen all around, and you want to move and groove. You should see this show.

Suspended pool dance Fuerza Bruta

Fuerza Bruta is an extravaganza with many interesting moving pieces. Be prepared to move around around this standing-room only presentation thumping with a techno beat — it has a suspended pool hovers inches above the crowed, a moving 6-foot-high treadmill and a 20-foot curtain that brushes your fingertips.

Pool party comes to you at Fuerza Bruta

Fuerza Bruta means “brute force” and the show originated in Argentina. Dress casual and check your bags, You might get misted, and confetti’ed but this is all to help you get involved. Dance admit, it’s all in good fun. Works for those in wheelchairs by the way.

The Daryl Roth Theatre is a 19th-century former bank on Union Square East (101 East 15 Street Union Square). The show runs Wed-Sun with two shows on Saturday. It is about a 1 hour show. Insiders tip: 2 hours before the showtime there are a limited number of $25 tickets sold at the box office.

Tuesday night Battles took over Webster Hall and sonically ran our brains all over the place. To get things going they put that task on Nisennenmondai

My impression of Nisennenmondai burning brightly

Nisennenmondai is Tokyo-based Japanese noise-pop that really hit stride in their set on the third song. Sayaka Himeno (drums), Yuri Zaikawa (bass) and Masako Takada (guitar) really created an interesting and complex fare. This trio tossed around this large crow. I got a kick out of how they politely and diminutively they thanked us — very nice girls. I look forward to them next time starting with the third song and then taking it further to kick my butt again.

Battles at Webster Hall New York

I’ve been a fan of Battles for a while. Honestly I didn’t know how it would all change with the departure of Tyondai Braxton, but Dave Konopka, Ian Williams, and drummer John Stanierthis is a Battles to keep.

Battles at Webster Hall New York

Dense interesting energy is what they deliver. Battles is now an instrumental trio with guest vocalists. So joining them (in a pixelated fashion) on stage was Gary Numan, Kazu Makino (of Blonde Redhead) and Matais Aguayo.

Battles at Webster Hall New York

I’m really enjoying Battles Gloss Drop (Warp) this past month. It took me a while to pick up the CD (I’m too old school in these regards).

My wife and I went to hear Bill Hunt this past Friday at Aperture Gallery (547 West 27th Street, 4th Floor New York) We’ve gotten to know him a bit over the years at Photolucida (Portland) and FotoFest (Houston) portfolio reviews.

The talk at Aperture coincided with his new book, “The Unseen Eye: Photographs from the Unconscious”(Aperture). The nearly 400 images are in his private collection and contained masterworks by the well-known as well as images he collects from flea markets. The one thing that ties them all together is that they all capture heart and stop his feet — they have impact on him personally.

This was special performance piece for Bill which had projections and video which covered his many years of collecting photography — his life in photography. “This is a photography of me,” he joked during many of the portraits in his collection. The connections to his images are deep and what he collects is a way of exploring his different sides.

For more insights, buy the book, then read this great interview of Bill Hunt on At Length Magazine by Darren Ching and Debra Klomp Ching of the Klomp Ching Gallery.

The Independent is pleased to present photographs by Brad Carlile as our inaugural exhibition. Carlile was one of the winners of the 2009 Hearst 8×10 Photography Biennial, an international competition for emerging photographers. The Hearst Biennial judges Peter Lindbergh, Mary Ellen Mark, Steve McCurry, Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, & John A. Bennette, III. chose 8 photographers from over 1,000 entries. Works from Carlile’s Tempus Incognitus series will be on view from July 7th through August 7th.

Empty hotel rooms from all over the world form the basis of these works, all shot in multiple exposures over time in slide film, with no post-exposure or digital manipulation. The rooms are electric with acidic color, yet spare and detached by virtue of their transient energy and occupation. The perimeters of shifted space and time are blurred, giving a result both classic and contemporary.

My show was reviewed and recommended in the Willamette Week’s Visual Arts section

recommended. Brad Carlile

BRAD CARLILE This month, two local artists wrestle with divergent but equally mythic conceptions of the great American road. In Tempus Incognitus, photographer Brad Carlile’s striking exhibition at Eva Lake’s new popup, the Independent, the artist conjures a psychedelic nightmare of corporate hotels across the country. Carlile takes photos inside hotel rooms using slide film in multiple exposures that last from a scant 1/500 of a second to a languid 96 seconds. He keeps his camera on a tripod and exposes film throughout the day, which yields fantastical effects, superimposing wildly varying lighting conditions onto the same frame. As the hues overlap, they produce acidic lime greens and chartreuses, fuchsias and ruby reds in wholly unnatural combinations as light emanates from lamps and television screens and bounces off mirrors and windows. Except for the occasional rumpled sheet, there is no trace of human life in any of the prints, lending a dissonance between compositional starkness and chromatic oversaturation.

The hotels themselves are neither skanky nor swanky; they are the kind of middlebrow pabulum palaces that corporate drones deposit themselves in night after night. They are not going to win any awards for design or decor, but they are conveniently located near the airport and the convention center. Carlile is able to intuit and convey the vulgar neon desperation underneath the banal veneer of contemporary business travel. Where are you, America, and who are you—the Marriott or the Mustang Ranch? The only difference, Carlile suggests, is in the length of your exposure.

There is something eerie and otherworldly in Brad Carlile’s immaculate photographs. The prints in Tempus Incognitus show hotel rooms around the world photographed on slide film. Long exposures impart a richly saturated, thoroughly unnatural, and perversely arousing panoply of hues.
